Whipp News: Employment Data

New figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show Australia’s unemployment rate hit the highest level since last July rising to 5.6%, but the number of employed beat expectations as more full-time jobs were added.

Overall, 22,6000 net new jobs were added in April, exceeding forecasts of 20,000. The Federal Government has welcomed this news as it follows weak results in both February and March, and hits a Tony Abbott-era promise to create one million new jobs by 2018.

The Opposition has been quick to attack the Government over the new data, with Labor pointing out the unemployment rate is roughly the same as it was four and half years ago.
