Whipp News: Spanish women strike for International Women’s Day

Women workers in Spain have marked International Women’s Day with an unprecedented 24-hour strike, taking a stance against gender inequality and sexual discrimination.

According to the union involved, more than 5 million workers were involved in the action, affecting some of the public services in major cities, including Madrid and Barcelona.

With the mantra, “if we stop, the world stops,” organisers from the 8 March Commission urged women taking part in the strike to spend no money and ditch any domestic chores for the day. Data from the EU’s Eurostat reveals women in Spain are paid 13% and 19% less than their male counterparts in the public and private sectors respectively.
